Helping a Brother

Sometimes non-masons ask what we mean when we call each other brother. This is also a term used in motorcycle clubs (in our case an association) when we refer to fellow members. A basic explanation can be that, by our shared ideals and comradery, we become like family. Our friends become like brothers.

An example of this was seen today when a member of the Quarryman and past master of a Dorset lodge needed some help.

Due to mobility issues caused by serving our Queen and Country (at the time of service it was the Queen) a member needed some help relocating a large wardrobe and moving the bedroom around to assist in his personal mobility at his home. The call went out and 4 Quarrymen travelled 40 miles to his home and met another mason that is not a Quarryman to help him out.

The laughing and banter that we come to expect when we get together was present and we managed to help him out and attend to his request for assistance. What most did not see was our brothers wife’s happiness. In a personal moment she told me how much of a difference we were making to our brothers life at home. We came to help a friend but it was the appreciation of those closest to him that made it all worth while.

Whilst we focus on raising funds for charity, we are very much conscious that sometimes charity is not about money. It is more about giving your time to make someone else’s life better.
